Jasper Huang | A Journey Through Art
Jasper Huang (born 1978 in Taiwan, Tainan, currently residing in Paris, France) is an internationally renowned artist whose works span across both fashion and fine art. From a young age, he demonstrated a keen insight into human nature and exceptional observational skills, traits that have shaped his unique artistic perspective.
In 2001, Huang won the Young Talent Award in Fashion Design from ELLE magazine, marking the beginning of his rise to prominence. His design style was distinctive, pioneering the use of traditional Eastern peony fabric in Taiwan's high-fashion market, which helped him stand out in an industry then dominated by Western designs. In 2005, he established his eponymous fashion brand, quickly gaining international recognition and showcasing his collections at New York and Tokyo Fashion Weeks. He became one of the key figures in promoting Taiwanese aesthetic fashion on the global stage.
Beyond fashion design, his creative footprint also extended into other areas. In 2002, he was invited to design the visual concepts and costumes for Jay Chou’s concert, further solidifying his influence in both the entertainment and design industries. His works frequently appeared in international media and on screens, collaborating with prominent figures such as Lin Chi-ling and Demos Chiang Yu-bou. Simultaneously, his artistic creations were showcased at institutions like the Taipei Museum of Contemporary Art and the Fubon Art Foundation.
After fifteen years in the fashion world, Jasper Huang decided to return to the essence of art, seeking deeper creative connections. In 2019, he relocated to Paris to focus on creating with ink and silk paintings as his primary mediums. His works reflect a journey of over four decades, exploring profound themes such as identity, memory, and human desires through his observations of human nature.
Jasper's art integrates Eastern philosophical contemplation with deep insights into contemporary life. He primarily uses silk as his medium, employing ink, mineral pigments, and mixed media. His inspiration stems from the contradictions and emotional connections inherent in human nature, often blending abstract human forms with natural landscapes in his works, as though exploring the subtle balance between human existence and the essence of nature.
In 2022, he held a solo exhibition at Galerie de Thorigny in France, receiving high praise from art critics and successfully entering the Paris art scene. His works have since been showcased at major international galleries and art fairs, gaining the admiration of collectors and critics alike. He believes that each piece of art is a dialogue—a profound exchange with oneself, the viewer, and the world.
'' My work primarily delves into human desires, such as power, money, sex, and material possessions. Through my art, I pose non-judgmental questions, leaving it to the viewer to assess the depth of their own desires. I believe desire is an inherent part of human DNA, affecting us all. ''
Artist Statement :
My work aims to provide an open and unbounded space for viewers to freely explore and feel the emotions and meanings within the artwork. I believe that human desires, whether for power, wealth, sex, or material goods, are shared experiences deeply rooted in our DNA, shaping our behaviors and choices.
From an anthropological perspective, throughout history, humans have often pursued satisfaction through hunting and plundering. From an auditory standpoint, our language and sounds serve not only as communication tools but also as ways to express desires and emotions. Visually, cultural and artistic works throughout history often reflect our pursuit of beauty, power, and authority.
In my creations, I attempt to blend the perspective and chiaroscuro techniques of Western painting with the philosophy and imagery of Eastern painting. In Western art, light and shadow are key in shaping objects and spaces, while in Eastern art, the emphasis is more on expressing mood and emotion. I strive to establish a dialogue between these two artistic traditions and create a poetic universe that blends elements from both East and West in my own innovative way.
My inspiration comes from observations and experiences in daily life.
I have a deep love for nature and often seek inspiration from it, incorporating elements from the natural world into my work. I also frequently visit museums and contemporary art exhibitions to find inspiration, exploring the connections between ancient cultures and modern society. I aim to integrate these diverse elements and perspectives into my work, creating a rich and profound artistic experience.
I often use tea, coffee, and other natural materials to add color to my works. This is not only for experimentation and exploration but also to incorporate elements of nature and humanity into my creations. I choose silk as my primary canvas material because its delicate and resilient nature perfectly conveys my creative concepts and emotions.
My works explore the nature and changes of desire, from material to spiritual, from surface to depth. I attempt to express these concepts in abstract and symbolic ways, allowing viewers to freely interpret and feel them. In my works, desire sometimes appears as a thin mist, sometimes as an insurmountable mountain peak, and sometimes as an endless dream, always changing and never ceasing.
